Have You Ever Seen 'A Storm in a Teacup'?

If you want to describe something as nice and easy, you can say it was "a tea party", but if something was very difficult you can also say it was "no tea party!"

Maybe you took a very long journey by bus to visit family and the bus was not very comfortable, you could say, "Well, that bus ride was no tea party, but I'm here!"

"A tempest in a teapot" or a "storm in a teacup" is when something makes people angry or worried, but isn’t actually very serious. A "tempest" is a storm, but one that's small enough to be in a teapot can’t cause much damage.

Perhaps your bus was late to arrive, and it made all the passengers very angry. You could tell your family, "Everyone was angry about waiting, but then the bus arrived, so it was a storm in a teacup really."

Fruitcake is often eaten at Christmas with black, English tea. Calling someone "nutty as a fruitcake" is a way of saying they're crazy. This is because "nutty" and "nuts" are also ways of saying crazy, and fruitcakes are usually made with both fruit and nuts.

So if your cousin asked if you were taking a bus home when you left, you might say, "You must think I'm nutty as a fruitcake. I'm going to fly home!"

How to Say You're Sad in English!

Everyone will have to go through a sad event in their life at some point in time. So if you're ever "feeling blue," or sad, here are some expressions you can use.

When people get sad news, they might be so sad that they "cry their heart out," or cry for a very long time. Or they could just feel sad, and say they have a "heavy heart." For example, you could say "When my best friend moved away, I cried my heart out, and since then I've had a very heavy heart."

Some say that the idea of a "heavy heart" might have come from old Egyptian stories, that said the gods would weigh your heart when you die to see if you should go to heaven. Thousands of years ago, the Egyptians believed that all thoughts and emotions came from the heart.

If someone or something makes a person feel so bad that they start to cry, then you could say they have been "reduced to tears." Or, if something makes a person feel so sad that they can no longer behave normally, or they lose control of their emotions, you could say they have "fallen to pieces."

For example, "His comments reduced me to tears. They were so mean I fell to pieces in front of my friends."
